“I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.” 2 Tim. 4:7-8.

I don't think Paul chose this analogy carelessly. Its meaning and application to our lives, 2,000 years later, is a remarkable manifestation of the power of the scriptures and how we can apply them in our lives. I hope, with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, to help us all understand a little bit better what Paul was trying to tell Timothy—and us. To do that, I invite you on a metaphorical run with me. I perceive that  Paul was a sports fan. He lived in an area where there were lots of sporting events, and he often drew on these slices of everyday life to teach eternal principles—much like our Church leaders using the Olympics as examples in their sermons.

As a believer, you must choose your battles. Paul wasn't calling us to being combative and unnecessarily difficult to relate with. Paul wasn't calling us to be unrealistic and petty. We must choose our battles. We do not fight against flesh and blood, therefore our battles are not physical battles, neither do we equip ourselves with natural weapons. Our weapons are not natural, neither are they hybrid. Our weapons are spiritual, our warfare is spiritual, our mindset and operations should of necessity be spiritual. If you miss this you will end up fighting the wrong warfare.

Fighting a good fight must involve keeping your eyes on Jesus. He is the commander in chief of the heavenly host. We are not fighting alone. We fight according to His word and Instructions. In Him live, move and have our being. We dare not move when He is not instructing it. We dare not become complacent, we are designed to act on His commands. The scripture becomes our roadmap, our prompter and our standard for all we do. Everything that is not permitted in heaven is not permitted in our lives. Everything that is contrary to God's will, we have the mandate to force it out of our lives and our space. May you be properly rewarded for your life of accurate obedience.
