“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.” Psa. 91:1-3.

On August 13, 2004, Hurricane Charley brought fierce destruction to areas of Florida. During the storm, 25-year-old Danny Williams went outside to seek protection under the branches of a big and very old banyan tree. Friends and family said that the protective branches of the spreading tree had been a favorite peaceful place for the Fort. But on that day, his place of safety became a death trap. The tree fell on Williams and killed him. Sometimes, the places and situations we look to for protection can ultimately be the most harmful.

Ultimately, our protection comes from God. In times of physical and spiritual attack and in threatening situations of all kinds, those who trust in the Lord find Him to be a strong tower of protection.  Under the old covenant, God promised physical protection to His people, the Israelites, as they kept the law. That divine protection extended to keeping them safe against the nations that would come against them as they entered the Promised Land: “I will send My terror ahead of you, and throw into confusion all the people among whom you come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you” Exo. 23:27

Here we see God protecting those whose actions accorded with His foreordained plans and purpose. You must learn how to make God your place of safety and protection. He is a worthy protection and support system against the storm of life. We may not all be on the front lines of a natural war, but we all face an enemy who intends to steal, kill and destroy. However, we must always remember our God is more powerful than the devil. And when we make God our refuge, we have security in Him. Just like a newborn baby wrapped in a warm, secure blanket, God wraps us in His love, power and protection.
