“Since, then, you have been raised with Christ, set your hearts on things above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things above, not on earthly things.” Col. 3:1-2.
I am convinced that the reason most people will live a life of mediocrity with little or no influence or even fail, is because they aimed too low. The issue here is not about hitting your target, rather what kind of target did you aim at? You should aim high with the life that God has given you. Where should your aim be and how high should it go? Whatever your heart loves the most and that which your mind thinks about the most will determine the life that you live. You aim at what you look at, so how can you know if what you are looking at is the right target? It starts with what attitude you are cultivating. If you cultivate greed, your target can’t be right.
Our text says set your heart on the things above. The world has a way of getting you down. It fills you with distractions, temptation, and entertainment, promising you a flinty happiness which is never fully delivered. Perhaps you have felt weighed down when looking at the state of the world, overwhelmed by the corruption and confusion that surrounds you. Even the day-to-day responsibilities that you are given can feel burdensome. When you focus on these earthly things your eyes slip from the “things above.” You forget the blessings and promises you have through adoption as sons and daughters of Jesus and your satisfaction in Christ slips away as well. Yet, it doesn’t have to be this way!
Whether you’re setting expectations for yourself, for your team or family, aim high and don’t settle for good enough. At the same time, be realistic, and set interim objectives to ensure you’re on the path to achievement and to build momentum. Importantly, keep in mind the best way to push beyond “good enough” is to be better. Don’t settle for what you were last year, there is a better you available, upgrade. Aiming high requires courage, and resilience. Give it what it takes to improve on yourself. My bet is you will be surprised to see how much you’re capable of achieving m, if you aim high enough. Selah!
