“Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.” 2 Tim. 2:15.
Some folks do not read the Bible because, they say, there are so many things in the Book that they cannot understand. It is said that these things which cannot be understood trouble them. Of course these are mere excuses. What do you do when he sits down to a bowl of fresh fish pepper soup, only to find out that the fish is full of bones. Will you excuse yourself, and say, "I can't chew the bony parts of the fish, therefore I won't try to eat any of it?" Hardly. You will merely put the bones to one side and enjoy the edible part of the fish. Why not put at least this much effort into Bible reading? You must learn how to separate the things that seem hard and difficult to understand for now and pursue daily thorough understanding of what is readily available to you. As you grow up the more spiritually your understanding of other things will increase.
Engaging with God’s Word is essential for spiritual growth, transformation, and finding direction. You must treat Bible study as a serious, rewarding task, not a casual hobby. Just as a worker diligently handles their duties to avoid shame, you are to be thorough in understanding God’s truth. The Berean believers are honoured because they didn't just hear the Word; they "examined the Scriptures daily" to verify what they were taught. The same Spirit who inspired the Scriptures helps believers understand them. It therefore means understanding of scripture doesn't happen mysteriously, it happens based on your effort to diligently search. Study should always begin with prayer, asking God to open your eyes to the spiritual truths within the text. Trust me, there's no telling the level of understanding and insights God will eventually bring you into.
The goal of study is change and complete transformation, not just information. Studying with the intention to apply the Word leads to spiritual fruit and blessing. We have too many people who possess head knowledge of God’s Word, which has no effect on people's nature and character. You must practice meditation on God's word, it involves thinking deeply about Scripture throughout the day, allowing it to take root in your mind and heart, rather than just reading it once. The Bible is described as more desirable than gold and more necessary than food. Recognizing its immense value helps fight against laziness and distraction. We must approach the Bible with the expectation that it will feed our souls. Studying it brings wisdom, salvation, and spiritual maturity. Selah!
