“Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.” Rom. 12:2
A great man of God once said: The longer I live, the more I realize the impact of attitude on life. Attitude, to me, is more important than facts. It is more important than the past, than education. Attitude is more important than money, than circumstances, failures, successes, than what other people think or say or do. It is more important than appearance, giftedness or skill. It will make or break a company, a church, a home. The remarkable thing is we have a choice every day regarding the attitude we will embrace for that day. We cannot change our past, we cannot change the fact that people will act in a certain way. We cannot change the inevitable. The only thing we can do is play on the one string that we have, and that is our attitude. I am convinced that life is 10 percent what happens to me and 90 percent how I react to it. And so it is with you. We are in charge of our attitudes.
Your attitude is a result of your inner choices, thoughts, and personal development, rather than merely predetermined, external circumstances. The ability to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances is the "last of the human freedoms. While emotions may be automatic, our attitude is not automated. We are the architects of our own frame of mind and decide whether to view situations through a positive or negative lens. This conscious, daily decision allows us to take control of our mental state. While we cannot control all external circumstances (such as traffic, pandemics, or other people's actions), we can entirely control our response to them. An attitude is the outcome of how we interpret life's experiences, and by shifting our interpretation, we shift our attitude.
Attitude is directly shaped by our thought life, and because we have the ability to monitor and alter our internal dialogue, we can change our attitude. By choosing to focus on solutions rather than problems, we can actively manage and improve our mindset, making it more resilient and positive. A healthy mind often leads to a healthy body, and taking charge of our attitudes involves managing our stress and emotional reactions. By managing our mental state, we avoid becoming victims of our surroundings and instead become empowered to dictate our emotional and mental atmosphere. Attitude is a direct reflection of our emotional intelligence. By developing self-awareness—understanding our own emotions and behaviors—we can pause before reacting, evaluate our initial negative thoughts, and select a more productive, positive attitude to life.
