“And you should imitate me, just as I imitate Christ.” 1 Cor. 11:1.
President Calvin Coolidge, born in Plymouth, Vermont, was “distinguished for character more than for heroic achievement,” he invited some people from his hometown to dinner at the White House. When the time came for serving coffee, the president poured his coffee into a saucer. As soon as the home folk saw it, they did the same. Next, the president poured some milk and added a little sugar to the coffee in the saucer. The home folks did the same. They thought that surely the next step would be for the president to take the saucer with the coffee and begin sipping it. But the president didn’t do so. He leaned over, placed the saucer on the floor, and called the cat to have some, now they are confused on what to do next.
To imitate is to mimic, simulate, or reproduce closely. When you imitate something, you’re following it as a model. To imitate is to impersonate–to take some characteristic, quality, or attribute of another and reproduce it in your own person. 3 John. 11 “Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The person who does what is good is from God. The person who does what is evil has never seen God.” We are walking through an evil world today. We will interact with people today who have given themselves over to evil. Our minds and hearts may be alluringly tugged in the direction of evil today. Evil is an imitation of the devil. We are not permitted by whatsoever means to imitate evil.
Who will you imitate today? In the way you conduct yourself? The way you treat others? The way you react to blessing and frustration? Are there excuses that need to be left behind? Old crutches that need to be discarded? Bad examples that need to be forsaken? Today, I’m blessed with a choice: who or what will I imitate? Today, I’m blessed with an opportunity: in my own heart, making that difference begins with refusing to imitate evil and setting my heart on the imitation of good. God bless you. We are no doubt called to Imitate, but not everything is good enough. We must have righteousness as our standard as we walk the path of imitation.
