“Be devoted to one another with mutual love, showing eagerness in honoring one another.” Rom. 12:10.
A member of a certain church, who previously had been attending services regularly, stopped going. After a few weeks, the minister decided to visit him. It was a chilly day. That evening, the minister found the man at home all alone sitting by a blazing fire. Guessing the reason for his minister’s visit, the man welcomed him and led him to a comfortable chair near the fireplace and waited. The minister made himself at home but said nothing. In the grave silence, they both watched the fire burn.
After some minutes, the pastor without permission picked up a brightly burning log from the fire and put it outside the fire. Still silent, they both watched it burn but dying out gradually. As the fire of the removed log died out totally, without a word spoken since the initial greeting. The minister glanced at his watch and chose this time to leave. He slowly stood up, picked up the cold, dead log and placed it back in the middle of the fire. Immediately it began to glow once more, with the light and warmth of the burning coals around it. He walked away, the message has been passed, and received.
We all burn better together. We must learn the discipline of not forsaking the assembly of the saints. We all need each other to become better at what we do. The more we stay away from each other the worse we are becoming in bearing each other’s burden. The mystery of fellowship of the saints will be better understood when we meet Jesus face to face. While we remain in this earth body we must condition ourselves to sharpen each other. Manage each other, love each other, counsel each other. When one hurts, all must be hurting. When one wins, we all win. This is the mystery of the church of Jesus.
