“Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may be blameless and pure, children of God without blemish though you live in a crooked and perverse society, in which you shine as lights in the world.” Phil. 2:14-15.
I remember hearing of a man at sea who was very sea-sick. If there is a time when a man feels that he cannot do any work for the Lord it is then—in my opinion. While this man was sick he heard that a man had fallen overboard into the water. He was wondering if he could do anything to help to save him. He laid hold of a light, and held it up on the port-hole of the ship. Guess what? The drowning man was saved. When the saved man gave this testimony. He said he had sunk down the second time, into the dark water feeling it was all over suddenly he saw a bright light from the pothole of the ship down again for the last time, when he put out his hand. Just then, he said, someone held a light at the port-hole, and the light fell on his hand. A man caught him by the hand and pulled him into the lifeboat.
It seemed a small thing to do to hold up the light; yet it saved the man’s life. If you cannot do some great thing you can hold the light for some poor, perishing drunkard, who may be won to Christ and delivered from destruction. Let us take the torch of salvation and go into these dark homes, and hold up Christ to the people as the Savior of the world. Making your light shine in a dark world means actively reflecting the love, truth, and character of Christ in your daily life. It is about being a beacon of hope, truth, and grace so that others are drawn to God rather than the confusion of the world. There's no doubt that darkness is out there in the world and gross darkness in the hearts of men but we are admonished to shine our light, meaning living a life of moral purity and honesty, standing out from the corruption and deceit of the world.
A dark world is often filled with hate, bitterness, and division. Shining your light means choosing to love, forgive, and demonstrate grace to those around you. Shining requires allowing the Holy Spirit to transform your character, replacing negative traits like anger and selfishness with love, joy, peace, and patience. "For you were once darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth)." Eph. 5:8-9. You must push forward and maintain your optimism or drive, even when the environment is hostile or discouraging. It is the bravery to remain true to your morals and unique identity, rather than conforming to toxic or cynical societal pressures. Your perseverance acts as a beacon, offering hope, motivation, and a path forward for those around you who may be struggling with the same darkness. It is the active choice to combat hate with love, ignorance with education, and despair with action of inspiration. Selah!
