Cultivating Empathy.

"Finally, all of you, have unity of mind, sympathy, brotherly love, a tender heart, and a humble mind" 1 Peter 3:8.

A man fell into a deep pit apparently from his own carelessness and couldn't get out. He sat there rueing his fate.  Fortunately for him someone was passing by, the passerby glanced down, and said, "I feel your pain, I can imagine how tough it is with you down there." He walked away. Another person passed by and said, "You shouldn't have fallen in there, you must have been a careless person." Then comes this inspirational positive thinker, who said, "Don't worry, keep a smile on your face, never say negative words about your situation!" Finally, the last man came along, walked over to the edge, climbed directly down into the dark hole, and said, "I know exactly where you are. Here, let’s get out together." Empathy isn't shouting advice from the safety of the top; it is willing to step into the mess and grief of another person to walk them out. 

Empathy is the divine, active capacity to see another's situation from their perspective and truly share in their emotional experiences. For believers, manifesting it is not optional; it is the fundamental evidence of Christ's love within us, fulfilling the law of God and breaking down barriers of division. Empathy is never merely a passive feeling of pity; it requires being deeply moved in spirit to acknowledge and validate the emotional state of others. Believers must manifest this so that the lost and broken can experience the tangible care of a loving Shepherd. Empathy requires actively sharing in the emotional experiences of others, whether in joy or in sorrow. Believers must manifest this so that no one in the family of God rejoices or mourns in isolation, fostering profound unity within the body.

Empathy is patterned directly after Jesus, who intimately understands human weaknesses and steps into our pain. Believers must exhibit this so that they can effectively minister the comfort they have personally received from God. Empathy roots itself in the core commandment to treat others exactly as you would desire to be treated in their circumstances. The believer must manifest this because it fulfills the overarching law of Christ and honours the image of God in all people. Empathy transforms our speech, allowing us to build up and encourage those around us rather than tearing them down. Believers must manifest this so that their words minister grace to listeners and bring healing to the brokenhearted. Selah!

Dear Abba Father, I thank You for the gift of life and the privilege of salvation. Lord, I ask that You remove any barriers of judgment, prejudice, or self-focus that prevent me from truly understanding and connecting with those around me. When I am tired or overwhelmed, grant me Your patience and grace so that I can extend true empathy and compassion even when it is difficult. Let Your love override my natural tendencies, allowing me to be a vessel of Your kindness and understanding in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
