“Don’t be afraid, for I am with you! Don’t be frightened, for I am your God! I strengthen you – yes, I help you – yes, I uphold you with my saving right hand!” Isa. 41:10.

In 2003, a 13-year-old surfer named Bethany Hamilton was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark while surfing in Hawaii. She lost her left arm and so much blood with it, what many thought was the end of her future. For most, that would’ve been the end of the story.

But Bethany had something stronger than fear: faith. And a promise she clung to from Jeremiah 29:11. “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord… She believed those plans didn’t end with the accident. Just one month later, Bethany got back on a surfboard. And not long after that, she entered her first major competition. She didn’t just survive, she thrived. She went pro, won championships, and inspired millions. But Bethany never pointed to herself. She always pointed to God’s promises. She said, “I might have one arm, but I serve a God who’s bigger than any limitation.”

Hope didn’t erase her pain, but it redefined her purpose. So if you’re facing a setback that feels like it’s the end, Bethany’s life says otherwise. God’s promises aren’t blocked by tragedy. They often shine through it. She may have one arm, I guess you had God's promises to make up for the second arm. Setbacks are not final, but rather temporary obstacles designed to test faith, build character, and align one’s purpose with God's plan. The Bible teaches that God can transform moments of despair, failure, and disaster into great victories, often using setbacks as a setup for a greater blessing. What appears to be a total loss is actually an opportunity for God to demonstrate His power and orchestrate a "comeback," turning evil intentions or hopeless situations into good.

Adversity is not meant to destroy you, but to produce endurance, which in turn develops strong character and hope. Believers are admonished by scriptures to consider trials as "pure joy" because the testing of their faith builds perseverance, a necessary trait to carry a dream to completion. Even when you stumble, a righteous person gets back up again because God is the one who initiates and brings purpose to completion. God is not the author and deserter of our faith. He is not an author and quitter of our faith. He is the author and finisher of our faith. He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion, meaning your past failures cannot cancel God's ultimate plan for your life. Although, you must never make your past failures, your present reality, quit living in your past. Selah!
