“how shall we escape if we neglect so great a salvation, which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him.” Heb. 2:3.
A soap maker, who was not saved, walked along the road with a preacher one day. He said to the preacher, “I really do not see the effects and impacts of the gospel you preach, it has not done much good. There are still a lot of wickedness in the world, and wicked people, too.” Quietly they walked on. The preacher did not reply to his friend’s comment until they passed a dirty little child making mud pies in the gutter. With this before them, the preacher spoke, “Soap has not done much good; for there is still much dirt in the world, and many dirty people.” “O, well, you know,” said the Soap maker, “soap is only useful when it is applied.” “Exactly,” said the preacher, “so it is with the gospel we proclaim.”
The gospel is only useful when it is applied. It starts with acceptance, then application then results. The gospel doesn’t benefit you, if not embraced properly. There are at least three things we can do with the gospel of the Lord.
Reject It: This refers to a conscious and deliberate refusal to receive what is being offered to us. It is like saying, “I refuse”, and it is solemn. There is peril in rejecting the gospel, may you not be found wanting in Jesus name.
Neglect It: this refers to people who do not deliberately reject but at the same time they do not accept salvation – They have a careless, passive and very lifeless in attitude towards the gospel. Many people like this attend church and hear the gospel but do nothing about it, they ignore it. They hear about Jesus, but they do not receive Him as their Saviour.
Accept It: this means to hear, to believe and to receive – to trust and be saved – look up and embrace everything that the gospel of Jesus offers. This is the way to blessed living. May God lead us all to the place of true acceptance of the gospel and profitable practice of it in Jesus name.
