Follow Your Divine Compass.

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt meditate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Josh. 1:8.

The story is told about the father of a vacationing family who came across a large sign that read, “Road Closed. Do Not Enter.” The man proceeded around the sign because he was confident it would save them time. His wife was resistant to the adventure, but there was no turning back for this persistent road warrior. After a few miles of successful navigation, he began to boast about his gift of discernment. His proud smile was quickly replaced with humble sweat when the road led to a washed-out bridge. He turned the car around and retraced his tracks to the main road. When they arrived at the original warning sign he was greeted by large letters on the back of the sign “Welcome back, stupid!” Sometimes we all behave like this man, we have utmost confidence in ourselves to figure out issues or fix problems, but we let ourselves down. 

The older you become, the longer you live, certain things start making new sense to you. It doesn’t matter very much where you live but how you live is so important to God. Likewise, which job you do is of comparatively little importance, but how you conduct yourself at work is close to God’s heart. God’s guidance is more like a compass than a map. We are not given the fine detail of every decision on every day for the rest of our lives. God doesn’t want us to spend our time trying to discover the secrets of his will. He does indeed guide us through life ‘behind the scenes’ and every detail is known to him and under his sovereign control. He knows where he wants to take you, and he will get you there. But he does not provide us with a detailed map – he gives us a compass instead.

At every point along the journey, no matter where we are or what we are doing; we can consult the compass to see which direction to head. That direction is always towards righteousness and holiness and becoming like Christ… The compass is his own word to us: the Bible. It may not tell us the detail of every rock to step over, or whether to climb the mountain or tunnel through it, but it will constantly and unerringly point us to what God wants us to do every day of our lives. It will tell us what matters. God wants us to lovingly obey him. It will also tell us, by implication, that some decisions (or aspects of decisions) are not matters of right and wrong, and that in these circumstances we can use [common sense and] the wisdom God has given us to make up our minds. Your responsibility is to study your Bible with more interest and a willingness to do all that is written in it. Selah!

Dear Abba Father, I thank You for the gift of life and the privilege of salvation. Dear Lord, I thank You for the gift of Your Word, which is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path. Lord, I confess that I often fall short and merely hear Your Word without acting on it. Today, I ask for the grace and strength to be a doer of Your Word, not just a hearer. Mold my heart to love what You love and to desire obedience over convenience. Let Your Word take root in me so deeply that it shapes my thoughts, my words, and my actions every single day in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
