God Prefers losers.

“Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ’s sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong.” 2 Cor. 12:10.

We all want to be on the winning team, don’t we? That’s why millions of people filled out the stadium cheering their teams to Victory during match days. And it’s why millions more watched the live telecast. That multitude include myself. Success is a lousy teacher. It makes smart people think they can’t lose. That’s the problem with winners. Once you think you can’t lose, you feel invincible. At that point, you’re about to become a loser. You just don’t know it yet. You can win too much, too soon, too easily. Before long you prove the old adage that it’s just a short step from victory to defeat.

For all the problems that losing brings, at least it cures the illusion of invincibility. When I say God prefers losers, I mean he prefers people who know their weakness, see their flaws, admit their mistakes, and cry out to him for help. God specialises in taking losers and displaying his power through them. If you pay some more attention to the Bible, you will notice some canning semblance amongst those God used. Noah got drunk. Abraham lied about his wife. Sarah laughed at God. Moses murdered an Egyptian. Rahab was a harlot. Gideon was fearful. Jephthah made a foolish vow. Samson had serious problems with lust and anger. Eli failed as a father.

The list is endless trust me, David was an adulterer and a murderer. Solomon married foreign wives who turned his heart toward idolatry. Elijah struggled with depression. Jonah ran away from God.

Peter denied Christ. Paul argued with Barnabas. James and John wanted special seats in the kingdom. All the apostles argued about who was the greatest. God prefers people who know their weakness, see their flaws, admit their mistakes, and cry out to him for help. If God chose only well-rounded people with no character flaws, it gives room for pride and being self conceited. Now that we all know we were not chosen because we are perfect, it naturally makes us humble and committed to God for continuous help. This is not a licence to engage in a lifestyle of ungodliness, but a call to humble yourself under the mighty hand of God, in due season, he will exalt you.

“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think any thing as of ourselves; but our sufficiency is of God;” 2 Cor. 12:5.
