“Others are the ones sown among thorns: They are those who hear the word, but worldly cares, the seductiveness of wealth, and the desire for other things come in and choke the word, and it produces nothing.” Mark. 4:18-19.

One of the most destructive weeds that crop farmers must deal with is the Canadian thistle. It has an extensive root system that makes it extremely difficult to eradicate once it is established. The root structure can reach a depth of fifteen feet, and the roots can also spread out the same distance horizontally. These prolific roots crowd out the plants. Just twenty thistles in one square mile of field can reduce the yield of your crops. Canadian thistle is also very damaging to livestock because animals will not graze near it. Imagine such double jeopardy.

In the parable of the sower and the seeds, Jesus described people who are not fruitful because the Word of God that is planted in their heart is choked out by thorns. He gave us specific thorns we must guard against such as the cares of the world; when we succumb to this particular thorn, anxiety and fear can fill our hearts and minds. We live in an uncertain world, and unless we maintain our faith, it will be easy for anxious care to choke out the Word. Like the Canadian thistle, we have the responsibility to detecting and weeding off our lives every weed that is all out to choke out growth and development based on God's word.

Over the years, I have met many people who say “I have heard the word of God preached again and again. I have read the word of God from cover to cover but I have not really seen the proof of it in my life”. Now, the reason they speak like this is because they do not know that somehow they have opened themselves up to things that choke the word of God in their lives and stop it from bearing fruits in their lives. The word of God cannot bear fruits in your life, if you are worried about the issues of life, or your love for riches is overwhelming or you are too concerned about some frivolous things of this world. When you allow these things in your life, they go into you and make the word of God of no effect in your life. That is the Canadian thistle in your life to deal with, selah!
