“Are you weary, carrying a heavy burden? Then come to me. I will refresh your life, for I am your oasis. Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me.” Matt. 11:28-29. TPT.
The rechargeable batteries technology is actually not a recent invention. An early version of them was invented in 1859 by French physicist Gaston Plante. Imagine how surprised Plante would be if he could see how dependent we’ve become on his invention. The modern world wouldn’t exist without batteries. They run our vehicles, devices, computers and toys. Batteries are little boxes of energy that keep things powered, but they frequently must be connected to an external power source, or they run down and die—usually at the worst time.
Similarly, God created us with internal reserves of physical, emotional and spiritual energy; but we need frequent recharging, or we’ll wear ourselves out. We’re not perpetual motion machines. After we’ve expended energy, we must rest and replenish. I guess we do this physically by resting, mentally by meditating, and spiritually by leaning on the Lord in faith and fellowship. Jesus told His disciples to come with Him to a quiet place and get some rest. That’s a divine command from Him who made us. Don’t be afraid to take some time for yourself. This is a great time to recharge.
By the way, that is also what regular attendance of church and sitting down to be fed with God’s word does to you. It helps with replenishment in the area of your life where depletion has taken place. Some of us are running our lives on reserve batteries, we are perhaps running on red already. There is a need to recharge. Two words perfectly captures what it means to recharge. They are as found in our text: refreshment and rest. Both are found in Christ as you yield yourself more and more, regularly you find constant and perpetual refreshment and rest in Him.
