Journey To Selflessness.

"Do nothing from selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others" Phil. 2:3-4.

During the construction of the infamous Burma-Siam railway, prisoners of war were living in horrific conditions. Selfishness was the default, as everyone was starving and desperate, leading to a "me-first" mentality that worsened their situation. However, a shift occurred when a small group of men decided to start treating the sick and sharing their meager rations rather than hoarding them. One pivotal moment involved a missing shovel after a work detail. A Japanese guard, convinced a prisoner had stolen it, flew into a rage, demanding to know who took it and threatening to kill everyone. Finally, one soldier stepped forward. The guard beat him to death with his rifle, and the other prisoners were forced to carry the body back to camp.

The next day, it was discovered that no shovel was actually stolen. The count was wrong, not the soldiers. The death of that soldier changed the atmosphere of the camp. The prisoners realized that one man had voluntarily laid down his life for his friends the ultimate, terrifying act of selflessness. The camp shifted from "survival of the fittest" to "service to the needy." They started treating the sick, teaching each other, and sharing their food. I know the default setting of humanity is somewhat selfishness, but as believers in Christ, we can't win that way. We are born to be selfless and sacrificial. Your selfless act can change the world, you can make a difference, it's time to convince yourself to begin to live differently some people will call you a fool, some will in fact take you for granted, but trust me you will truly be rewarded by heaven if you choose love, compassion and selflessness as your new normal and default setting.

Cultivating selflessness as a believer requires intentionally shifting focus from self to God and others, modeled on Christ’s sacrifice. Key practices include humble service. Nobody exemplifies humble selfless service like mothers. As we across churches commemorate mothering Sunday it's time to acknowledge the mothers and learn from their selflessness. I today remember my mother's selflessness in raising six children with meagre income, doing odd jobs because life must go on. As believers we must deliberately cultivate such godly values. We must become generous givers even with our little, without necessarily wanting to be paid back. You must pray actively for a compassionate heart, and choose forgiveness. This transformation involves relying on the Holy Spirit to overcome your natural selfish tendency and turn it to selflessness. selah!

Dear Abba Father, I thank You for the gift of life and the privilege of salvation. Lord As 

celebrate mothers today, we ask that You strengthen them in their labour of love and grant them the grace to reap the fruits of their labour. I ask that You will give me the  strength to overcome self-centeredness, seeking a heart that prioritizes serving others, practicing humility, and demonstrating love, often patterned after Jesus. That no pride will be found in my life but a selfless compassion, enabling a generous, caring, and sacrificial nature in daily life in the mighty name of Jesus, amen.
