Knowing Jesus!

“When Jesus had come to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “Who do people say the Son of Man is?” Matt. 16:13.

A man has been sitting in a hospital waiting room, waiting to see the doctor. He waited for a while and began to grow impatient. He stood up and barged into the receptionist section, unwilling to wait any longer, he barged in and demanded to be seen by the doctor. “Don’t you know who I am?” Shouted the man. The receptionist calmly pressed the button on the microphone of her loudspeaker system and asked other waiting patients. “I have a gentleman here who doesn’t know who he is. Can someone please assist him in finding out who he is? Thank you.” Can you truly imagine someone going around asking people to tell them who they are? They might take it as evidence of pride or dementia. But what people believe and say about Jesus Christ will determine their destiny. Your confession concerning Jesus Christ is a matter of life or death.

The revelation of Jesus that liberates is the transformative, personal understanding that Jesus is the Truth, and by abiding in His Word, believers are set free from the bondage of sin, fear, condemnation, and spiritual death. This liberation is not merely an intellectual concept but an experiential reality where Christ’s life replaces the "old man," resulting in true freedom that lasts. True freedom comes from acknowledging one's enslavement to sin and accepting Christ's sacrifice, which breaks the power of sin. For instance, when the depth of Jesus’ love for you is revealed, it sets you free from the need for performance and brings security in your identity.

In our text, Jesus asked His disciples who men say he was, He wasn't asking because He was confused about His identity and personality. He needed to be sure that the disciples had accurate revelation of His person. It's the knowledge and revelation of Jesus you know that you live by. The revelation of Jesus as the Light of the world exposes lies, dispelling fear, shame, and confusion. The finished work of Jesus on the Cross brings total liberation to all believers who know this, and walk in this reality rather than trying to earn liberty through self help. While Jesus sets us free externally (like the children of Israel exiting Egypt), the revelation of the truth makes us free internally, causing the "Egypt" (old habits/thought patterns) to leave us. The ultimate aim of this liberation is to be free to serve God and live in righteous, holy freedom, not to live according to personal selfish desires. Selah!
