“To me belongeth vengeance, and recompence; their foot shall slide in due time: for the day of their calamity is at hand, and the things that shall come upon them make haste.” Deaut. 32:35.
I read about a report from London. Janine Brooks was a dental student when a man ran into her car and drove away. That was 10 years ago. Her damaged car resulted in a considerable financial burden on her student income but the man motorist neither apologized nor ever paid for the damage he had done until now. Now it is 10 years later. Now Janine Brooks, the former student, is a dentist and guess who came to her office needing a tooth to be pulled. He did not recognize her; she did recognize him. She told him it wouldn’t hurt; she lied. She waited 10 years for her payback. She didn’t have to hurt him to even up, but she made up her mind to get back her pound of flesh.
The Bible has a great deal to say about revenge. God actually reserves for Himself the right to avenge. God said, “It is mine to avenge; I will repay. In due time their foot will slip; their day of disaster is near and their doom rushes upon them” God tells us to never take revenge and to leave it to the Lord. God is the ultimate judge and when we seek revenge, we are taking His place. When we become overwhelmed with what others have done wrong, we become filled with anger and find ourselves focused on hate. Unlike us, God never takes vengeance from impure motives. His vengeance is for the purpose of punishing those who have offended, by working against his word and those who rejected Him.
It is tempting to try to take on the role of God and seek to punish those who we feel deserve it. But because we are sinful creatures, it is impossible for us to take revenge with pure motives. David, a “man after God’s own heart” 1 Sam. 13:14. refused to take revenge on Saul, even though David was the innocent party being wronged. David submitted to God’s command to forgo vengeance and trust in Him: As Christians, we are to follow the Lord Jesus’ command and trust him to help us properly handle people in our lives who have wronged us terribly. I know this sounds like a tall order, it is achievable, if you let God help you. God bless you.
