Letting Go And Letting God.

"Whoever conceals their sins does not prosper, but the one who confesses and renounces them finds mercy." Prov. 28:13.

In South America, Africa and Asia, the natives have devised a very effective method of trapping monkeys. The plan is deceptively simple: the natives take a gourd or some similar object and drill a hole just large enough for a monkey’s hand to pass through; they add some extra weight to the gourd with sand or pebbles, then put a nut or some fruit inside and place the gourd where a monkey will find it. Here’s what happens: the monkey sticks his hand through the hole to get the food but with the prize in its grasp, the monkey cannot get its hand back out. The hole is too small for the monkey’s hand to pass through so long as it’s holding the treat, and the gourd is too heavy for the creature to carry. Because the monkey will not let go of its prize, it becomes trapped. The animal gives up its freedom to hold on to a small piece of food. It seems obvious that all the monkey needs to do is let go of the bait and it can escape. But because it views the treat as its possession and is not willing to let go, the monkey is trapped. It loses its freedom.

Many Christians stay trapped in bad habits for the same reason a baited monkey gets caught: they refuse to let go of what is holding them down. Just as a monkey clenches a treat and cannot pull its fist out of a narrow opening, believers often remain stuck in destructive patterns because they will not surrender the temporary pleasures, fleshly comforts, or familiar sins binding their lives. Monkeys hold on to bait because they believe a free treat is worth the risk of losing their freedom. Christians often cling to familiar sins—such as gossip, toxic relationships, or worldly comforts—because they mistakenly believe these things provide happiness or protection. They fear letting go because the unknown requires stepping out on faith. Meanwhile the scriptures say "There is a way that appears to be right, but in the end it leads to death." Prov. 14:12.

Some believers attempt to break addictions and habits using mere human willpower. Without the inner transformation of the Holy Spirit, these efforts inevitably fail and result in frustration. Habits begin as thoughts. Christians often struggle because they accept Christ but fail to reprogram the way they think, allowing old, worldly patterns to dictate their daily choices and emotional responses. A lack of consistent Bible reading and prayer leaves the spirit weak and vulnerable to temptation. When believers neglect their spiritual "meals," they lack the strength to resist the bait of the enemy. Such Christians use bad habits as a coping mechanism for past pain, trauma, or rejection. They remain stuck because they try to break the habit without first allowing God to heal the root cause of their pain. Now it's time to quit hiding that issue, today let go and let God become your deliverer indeed. Selah!

DECLARATION:

Dear Abba Father, I thank You for the gift of life and the privilege of salvation. I come before You today acknowledging that I am powerless to break free from this destructive habit on my own. I confess that I often try to rely on my own strength, and I surrender it to You now. Lord, I let go of my grip on the past, my worries, and the temporary comforts that do not serve me. Please come into my heart and do a deep healing work for me. I cast all my burdens at Your feet, and I ask that Your peace, which surpasses all understanding, guards my heart and mind. In Jesus' name, Amen."
