Living In The Balanced Gospel.

“But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." Rom. 5:8.

Teenagers are much more inclined to take warnings about steroids seriously if the drugs' muscle-building benefits are acknowledged in the same speech, say doctors at Oregon Health Sciences University. That was the case when the doctors lectured nine high school football teams on the effects of steroids. They found that football players who heard a balanced presentation on steroids were 50 percent more likely to believe that the drugs could harm their health than those who were told just of the dangers. This isn't the only instance where scare tactics have been known to fail.  In spite of a massive, ongoing campaign on the hazards of cigarette smoking, millions continue to light up.  Health experts might be more successful if they acknowledged pleasurable aspects of smoking. Then once they had a smoker's attention, they could let loose on why it's time to quit.

Scare tactics—often referred to as "hellfire and brimstone" preaching rely on fear of judgment to compel repentance. While historically used to spark urgency, this method is increasingly ineffective in the modern, 2026 landscape for several reasons. 

Fear-based preaching often produces temporary compliance rather than genuine conversion. People may change their behaviour briefly to "escape punishment," but once the fear wears off, they often return to their old ways. Lasting transformation comes from a renewed heart, not an intimidated mind. Scripture teaches that "perfect love casts out fear," yet scare tactics use fear as the primary foundation for salvation. In a modern context, leading with condemnation rather than compassion often pushes people away, making it difficult to later articulate that God loves them as they are. 

Today’s generation is more skeptical of authority and less easily moved by warnings of a distant, unseen event. A heavy emphasis on fear often feels manipulative or abusive to a post-Christian,, skeptical culture, which views such tactics as outdated and unkind. Focusing only on judgment creates an incomplete picture of God. A one-sided message of hellfire overemphasized God's wrath while overshadowing His grace, mercy, and relational nature. This can make God appear as a hostile tyrant rather than a loving Father. If a person comes to Christ only to avoid hell, they lack the secure foundation of knowing they are loved, leading to a spiritual life characterized by guilt and anxiety rather than freedom and joy.
