“With all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love, endeavoring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.” Eph. 4:2-3.⁰
A man once asked the Preacher, George Mueller the secret of his service, Mueller responded: “There was a day when I died, utterly died; died to George Mueller, his opinions, preferences, tastes, and will; died to the world, its approval or censure; died to the approval or blame even of my brethren and friends; and since then I have studied to show myself approved only to God.” Yes! The secret of true life in the spirit is death. If you are not dead to self, you cannot live unto the Lord. Humility however becomes the standard. But only dead men can understand and operate this principle.
You must no doubt strive to reduce yourself to a level when humility becomes your way of life Indeed. Humility, patience and following the golden rule all help us build stronger relationships with others. God no doubt gives more grace to the humble but he resist the proud. You can imagine what God will do to a proud Church. In the Church, God’s Spirit provides extra glue that can help bind us together as a peaceful and harmonious family if we walk in humility. However, if that sounds easy, consider the original Greek word, the word Paul used for “endeavoring” in our text, it implies “intensely labour” or “zealously giving diligence” Godly unity is hard work, but it is work with a great and eternal reward.
Paul says that pastors and teachers are to equip the saints “until we all attain to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God” Eph. 4:13. In other words, the unity we pursue is unity in the truth. Of course, Christian unity is more than shared truth, but not less. Paul piles up the words for common-mindedness in Phil. 2:2, “Complete my joy by being of the same mind, having the same love, being in full accord and of one mind” May God grant us all the desire and commitment to live in harmony with one another, in accordance with the prescription of Christ Jesus our soon coming king.
