“But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.” 2 Peter. 3:18.

The continuing goal of every believer is to grow up in the faith spiritually. The all important question therefore is how do you measure spiritual growth? We are advised to examine ourselves regularly. Our approach to measuring ourselves should address specific aspects. For example, “Examine yourselves as to whether you are in the faith” 2 Cor. 13:5. We are also cautioned about how we measure others: “For with what judgment you judge, you will be judged; and with the measure you use, it will be measured back to you” Matt. 7:2. God is impartial, the yardstick with which you measure others you will be measured also. How should we go therefore about measuring ourselves?

Typically, We have natural metrics to measure our financial growth, physical growth and even educational growth. God expects us to apply the same principles in discerning spiritual growth. The Bible clearly says, “Ye shall know them by their fruits….” he didn’t say you shall know them by their gifts and talents. As believers we ought to walk in His likeness and image. Your spiritual growth must be measured based on how much of the fruits of the spirit that is manifested in you. We have a tendency to judge our spiritual growth based on the gifts of the Spirit. But the gifts do not aptly capture the level of our yieldedness and submission to the eternal will and counsel of the most high God.

We were admonished not to be conformed to this world in Rom. 12:2. However the level of our conformity to the likeness of Christ is quite important in measuring our growth. When we are becoming more compassionate and loving as He was, as forgiving as He was, living life in such a way that men can by our conduct conclude we have indeed been with Christ. It doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a gradual process. Our text says we must grow in grace and in the accurate knowledge of Jesus Christ. To achieve this ideal we must become totally aligned to and committed to the study and practice of the word of God. Hearer alone never gets blessed, it’s the doing of the works that brings us to the place of profitability in God.
