“…A certain man made a great supper, and bade many: And sent his servant at supper time to say to them that were bidden, Come; for all things are now ready.  And they all with one consent began to make excuse. The first said unto him, I have bought a piece of ground, and I must needs go and see it: I pray thee have me excused.” Luke. 14:16-18.

There was a young boy whose mother, unknown to him, planned a surprise birthday party. She had invited all his friends secretly to celebrate with him. After he got home, he went upstairs to his room. Then all his classmates and teachers gathered in the living room waiting to give him the surprise. Then his mother called him again and again, there was no response. She went to his room to get him, he was not there. He had climbed down a tree outside his window and was gone to a nearby park to play and catch fun. The rest of the children went on to enjoy a good time, but Johnny never turned up. When he came in for supper his mother asked where he had been; he had missed a wonderful time, planned just for him on his special day.

He tearfully confessed he had heard her call but thought she was sending him on an errand, so he went to catch fun until suppertime. How sad – for him and for us if we make the same mistake. There is a party being prepared. The guest list is all inclusive. No matter how many parties we have missed in this world, we don’t have to miss out on this party. The One who throws this party is all loving, all gracious, all generous. We are invited even though there is nothing in this world we can do to repay our host. All that is asked is that we accept the invitation.

When you become good at making excuses you won’t be good at anything else. Excuses are the tools a person with no purpose or vision uses to build great monuments of emptiness. Most people would learn from their mistakes if they weren’t so busy denying and defending them. When a winner makes a mistake, he says, “I was wrong.” When a loser makes a mistake, he says, “It wasn’t my fault.” Excuses are of no avail before God. He who excuses himself always accuses himself because denying a fault doubles it. It’s time to take responsibility and be all God has designed and wants you to be. God bless you.
