“When they arrived at the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and grabbed hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. The LORD was so furious with Uzzah, he killed him on the spot for his negligence. He died right there beside the ark of God.” 2 Kings. 6:6-7.
Concerning our spiritual life, there are things that belong together as a perfectly matched operating system. Two of the more important ones are surrender and service. They go together. Surrender without service is shallow piety and will get you nowhere. Once you get to the point of surrendering yourself to God, serving Him with all your heart and soul and strength should not be difficult for you. Service without surrender is a sterile duty. Try activating one without the other, and the spiritual cruise will result in circle making. No significant gain will result from such foolish exercise.
There is a challenge however in the church these days. People claim to surrender but pay lip service to their spirituality and growth. Unfortunately, God does not accept lip service. He clearly warned in the scriptures when He said “’These people honour me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me.” Matt. 15:8. If you have chosen to be a Christian, don’t be a selfish and self centred one. Selfishness will get you nowhere. God is not looking for attention seekers, He is looking for yielded Vessels who are ready to serve accurately.
I need to also add that another thing to perfectly align with service is knowledge. You can’t serve the God you don’t know, you will serve into trouble. That in a nutshell described the experience of Uzzah in our text. If Uzzah had submitted himself to accurate knowledge of dealing and walking with the Lord, he would have known that the Ark of the covenant was never meant to be carried on a Cart. Well, he wasn’t the only guilty party in that. However his ignorance caused him his life when he tried to help God by handling the Ark. Your service must be accompanied with accurate knowledge of God, selah!
