“And the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus.” Phil. 4:7. NET.

Remember the acronym GIGO adapted from the computer programming industry. It stands for Garbage Input Garbage Output: meaning that you can only get out of a computer what has been programmed into it. The same principle applies to our minds. If you allow garbage in – such as  violence, pornography, vile language or mixing with questionable company etc. – and life will produce the corresponding results. Garbage input, garbage output. Some people brush this aside saying to themselves ‘what I watch or who I associate with doesn’t affect me’ but think of it like this: Your mind is like a sponge. If you knocked over a glass of sour milk and you used a sponge to mop it up, what would happen afterwards if you squeezed the sponge? Would you get fresh cream from it or would you get sour milk? No doubt sour milk, that is how your mind operates. You must guard it or else you will be sorry.

Guarding your heart is necessary to hang onto the truth hidden in our hearts and to block lies that are trying to make their way into our heart and mind. This “guarding“ is also preventative. Our text says “the peace of God“is what guards before the lies come in and before the truth flees. We’ll talk more about how to get that peace shortly. Our hearts are the driver of thoughts, passions, desires, appetites, affections, purposes, endeavors, will and character. It impacts how we understand the world around us. Praise God that the peace  of God has the power to guard our heart. We can also praise God that we are not left to the care and shaping of our heart.

The heart is the control center for our thoughts, passions, desires, will, character and endeavors. He does not leave us to manage our own heart. Instead, He gives us a new heart and helps us through his Holy Spirit to transform our hearts sanctification and even guards our hearts. He is so good! God's word becomes the only instrument in our hands to enable us to come into a better understanding of how life operates. You will remain the same person you are now in 10 years without a thorough encounter with the power of God's word. Seek to become more acquainted with God's word, selah.
