“All bitterness, anger and wrath, shouting and slander must be removed from you, along with all malice. And be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving one another, just as God also forgave you in Christ.” Eph. 4:31-32.
Sixty-eight-year-old Elsie Holdren lost her position as a security guard in August 2010 because she was too courteous. Her superiors wrote, “Due to your caring and giving nature, you are compromising your position as a security officer. Being caring and giving is not a job requirement, nor is it what you are paid to do.” Elsie was transferred to a new position in nearby Melbourne. I guess it’s strange. Most people would not be fired because they are too nice, but because they are not nice enough, but in this case she was fired for being kind and courteous. In other words, you requirement here is to be at least firm and perhaps mean.
Irrespective of the fate of Elsie Holdren, A kind, courteous Christian is the most powerful argument that can be produced in favour of Christianity. If we would humble ourselves before God, and be kind and courteous and tender hearted and pitiful, there would be one hundred conversions to the truth where now there is only one. Kindness, is one of the graces of the Spirit, and should be cultivated by all. It has power to soften natures which without it would grow hard and rough. Those who profess to be followers of Christ, and are at the same time rough, unkind, and uncourteous, have not learned of Jesus.
Values and virtues have indeed been neglected in our present age. It isn’t just that men aren’t displaying talents and skills, it’s rather that godliness seems not to count. Everywhere we look, we can see evidence that we are living in an increasingly ungodly world. I know we all are surrounded by people who show little regard for others and it is very easy to give in to the pressures and let godly values escape us. We are admonished never to follow multitudes to do evil. Christ values acts of heartfelt kindness. We live in a dark world that is yearning for light. Our acts of kindness may just be the light that is beaming from our life to lighting the world. Scriptures clearly says in Gal. 6:10. “So then, whenever we have an opportunity, let us do good to all people, and especially to those who belong to the family of faith.” I trust God to help us not to fail in this regards in Jesus name, amen.
