"But put a knife to your throat if you are a man given to appetite. Do not desire his delicacies, for they are deceptive food." Prov. 23:2-3.

Lyndon B. Johnson served as the 36th President of the United States. He assumed office following the assassination of President John F. Kennedy and was later elected. Standing at 6 feet 3 inches tall, his weight typically fluctuated between 200 and 210 pounds, placing his Body Mass Index (BMI) right at the border of the overweight category. During his presidency, his wife, Lady Bird Johnson, bluntly challenged him by saying, "You can't run the country if you can't run yourself". This is a profound truth for every believer. Whether we are leading a ministry, just living your life, parenting, or simply witnessing to others in our community, we must first learn to govern our own appetites, tongues, and emotions. It takes conquering your appetites before you can cover and control your life.

Conquering your appetite is foundational to self-mastery. If you cannot control physical cravings such as food, sex, drink etc you will struggle to control your mind, emotions, and life decisions. True discipline begins by mastering your desires rather than letting them rule you. Physical cravings are temporary, but what you feed spiritually determines your strength. True satisfaction is found in God's will. Indulging every impulse leads to a loss of control. You must exercise wisdom and know when to draw limits on your desires. Treat your body as a sacred space, focusing on stewardship over indulgence. Recognize that just because something is permissible does not mean it is beneficial. Identify physical or digital habits (like excessive snacking, streaming, or social media) that are dominating your time, and set firm boundaries to break their grip on your daily schedule.

When you feel an overwhelming urge for temporary satisfaction, you don't  have to validate such craving, feed your spirit instead. Replace the craving by reading the word, praying, or engaging with spiritual resources. Treat life-management like an athletic competition. Enforce physical and mental discipline through intentional scheduling and moderation, ensuring your body serves your ultimate purpose rather than dictating your actions. If you constantly use food, material goods, or distractions for emotional comfort, these have become idols. Deliberately focus your mind on higher, eternal purposes rather than immediate, sensory gratification. This is a call for radical self-awareness and restraint. Learn your personal triggers and avoid indulging in situations where self-control fails you. Cultivate the virtue of temperance in your diet, finances, and entertainment. May God grant you wisdom, understanding and restraint. Selah!

DECLARATION:

Dear Abba Father, I thank You for the gift of life and the privilege of salvation. Lord, give me the strength to make wise, God-honouring choices in my daily routine, from how I use my time to how I treat my body. Remind me that my body is Your temple and give me the resolve to avoid habits that pull me away from You. I surrender my mind to You. Guard my thoughts and help me to filter out negativity, anxiety, and ungodly desires. When temptation or distractions creep in, fix my focus on Your truth and Your kingdom. In Jesus' name, Amen.
