Thurs. APRIL 18th 2024.

“If you will fear the Lord and serve Him, and listen to His voice and not rebel against the command of the Lord, then both you and also the king who reigns over you will follow the Lord your God.” 1 Sam. 12:14.

In a book entitled Down to Earth, John Lawrence tells the story of a city that dared God to show Himself and paid a terrible price. It seems that the city of Messina, Sicily, was home to many wicked, irreligious people. On December 25, 1908, a newspaper published in Messina printed a parody against God, daring Him to make Himself known by sending an earthquake.  Just three days after Christmas in 1908, southern Italy was devastated by an earthquake—the largest in European history—and a tsunami that would claim the lives of more than 100,000 people.

Have you ever wondered is it okay to question God? Or is it a sin to question God? The reality is in life we will face difficulties. We will have hard seasons. That’s part of the human experience and Christians are not exempted. For many Christians these seasons can cause us to start questioning God. There’s a difference between questioning God and accusing him. We can question God in a way that still holds that he sees what we do not. When we question God we should do so in a way that is respectful and honouring.

Don’t stop asking questions. In this life we will never have it all figured out. There will always be something that causes us to question God. And it’s important that we never stop bringing our questions to God. There will be times when we are tempted to hide our questions. Fight that urge. Ask your questions. When we do that we will find a loving God who will use these questions as an opportunity to grow our faith. Never become irreverent, never become vain and foul mouthed to begin to speak profanity like they did in Messina in Sicily and saw the wrath of God.
