“Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me.” Like. 9:23.
When the renowned American preacher Billy Sunday got converted and joined a church, a Christian man put his arm on the young man’s shoulder and said, “ There are three simple rules I can give to you, and if you will hold to them you will never become a backslider.” He said “Take 15 minutes each day to listen to God talking to you; take 15 minutes each day to talk to God; take 15 minutes each day to talk to others about God.” Billy Sunday was deeply impressed and determined to keep these rules for life.
From that day on throughout his life he made it a rule to spend the first moments of his day alone with God and His Word. Before he read a letter, looked at a paper or even read a telegram, he went first to the Bible so that the first impression of the day might be what he got directly from God. God didn't necessarily compel these rules on him, but diligence and discipline did. Listening to those who have passed through a phase in life and heeding their advice can be a very wise decision in your life. Billy Sunday ended up as a great man of God.
Following Jesus must involve discipline. You cannot go far with him if you do not embrace the rigour of daily obedience and daily followership. You must learn the principles of self denial, you can't give your flesh everything it desires on a daily basis and want to please God. You must embrace denial of some unnecessary pleasures for the sake of building resistance. You must also according to scriptures bear your cross daily. You noticed that I use the word your cross. Belonging to Jesus confers on us the responsibility of making his cross ours on a daily basis. You must learn this principles for your spiritual success and wellbeing.
