“For if we live, we live to the Lord, and if we die, we die to the Lord. So then, whether we live or whether we die, we are the Lord’s.” Rom. 14:8.
The story is told of a woman who had finished shopping and returned to her car. She found four men inside the car. She dropped her shopping bags, drew a handgun, and screamed, “I have a gun, and I know how to use it! Get out of the car.” Those men did not wait for a second instruction; they got out and ran like crazy. The woman, somewhat shaken, loaded her shopping bags and then got into the car. But no matter how she tried, she could not get her key into the ignition. Then it dawned on her: she was in the wrong car. Her car was parked four or five spaces away! The same make and colour.
She loaded her grocery bags into her own real car now and then drove to the police station to turn herself in. The desk sergeant to whom she told the story nearly fell off his chair laughing. He pointed to the other end of the counter, where four men were reporting a carjacking by an old woman with thick glasses and curly white hair, less than five feet tall, and carrying a large handgun. No charges were pressed against her. It was a case of mistaken identity. She thought it was her car, but it really belonged to someone else. We think our lives and our finances are our own, but they really belong to God. Nothing here on earth is really ours, we are at best, caretakers. The real owner will someday ask us to give account of our stewardship.
Until it begins to down on us all that the life we live is a gift from God, we may never live it to please him. The greatest joy in life comes from knowing God and his love, and then living in a daily relationship with him. We who know him through Christ get to experience the joy of his presence and the pleasures of living with God. What are these pleasures? The pleasure of knowing that all we have in this world are His, he gave them to us we do not live for ourselves. He will one day call us home, with this consciousness lies our ability to live for his glory not for ourselves selah!
