“Wherefore the LORD God of Israel saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now the LORD saith, Be it far from me; for them that honour me I will honour, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.” 1 Sam. 2:30.
It is said that General Napoleon the Great once lost control of his horse, while it was riding furiously towards a crash, a private soldier in his army saw the incident jumping into the path of the horse and took control of it. Napoleon then said, “Thank you, Captain.” Don’t forgot this man was a private. However with that one word Napoleon promoted the soldier from the rank of private to captain. As strange as this was it couldn’t have happened without the private soldier putting his general first. Likewise, God promises to honour His servants, you must however realize that honour will never come on those who do not earn it.
What you honour will come towards you, what you dishonour will exit your life. As Christians, we ought to be the world’s greatest example of high integrity and the most honourable men and women on the face of God’s earth. Other people should know us by our honour. Honour is God’s system—it is His way, His being and His doing. And He expects it to be ours, too. The first place we are called to direct our honour is to Him. Rev. 5:12 says He is “worthy…to receive…honour and glory and praise” (NIV). Without complete and genuine honour to God, it will be impossible to honour anyone else. So this is where it starts. No doubt if you honour God, you will be honoured by God.
The command to honour your parents may seem easy to some, while much more challenging for others who were raised in negative or abusive environments. Do I think based on conduct, all Parents are deserving of honour? No. I don’t think so. But did God command that we honour them all the same? Yes indeed. How can you honour someone who has been cruel or who is no longer in a relationship with you? It’s starts in your heart, before it becomes your conduct and actions towards them. Even if you cannot or do not have a relationship with your parents, you can choose not to think or speak ill of them, no matter what has happened. Never forgot the secret of God honouring and blessing you is that, you obey him, then He will honour and bless you in return selah!
