The Power Of Humility.

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.” Col. 3:12.

I read a story about Abraham Lincoln that shocked me. May God grant us all the wisdom and courage to be humble and not to feel small in our humility. Lincoln once got caught up in a situation where he wanted to please a politician, so he issued a command to transfer certain regiments of soldiers. When the secretary of war, Edwin Stanton heard, he tirelessly presided over the giant Union military establishment during most of the American Civil War (1861–65). When he received the order, he refused to carry it out. He said that the President was a fool. Lincoln was told what Stanton had said, and he replied, "If Stanton said I'm a fool, then I must be, for he is nearly always right. I'll see for myself." As the two men talked, the President quickly realized that his decision was a serious mistake, and without hesitation he withdrew it.

Humility is an important character quality in the Christian life. Although most of us know this, we also likely know that humility is one of the most difficult qualities to develop and consistently live out in our Christian walk. The very nature of humility seems counterintuitive to our culture’s values. Our society applauds independence, fame, success, and self-reliance. Humility often feels like a paradox, but it’s consistent with Jesus’ teachings. Humility is not gifted to you by God as a gift of the spirit, humility must as a matter of necessity be cultivated. It takes so much effort, sacrifice and work to eventually develop humility.

It’s so easy as a leader or person in authority to be anything but humble. You must however desire humility enough to pray it into your life and operation. Humility will lead us to conclude that we are not always right and that we do not always command all the facts. Therefore, whenever possible, resist drawing conclusions until you give people the opportunity to tell their side of the story. When you do this, you are admitting that there is room for another perspective. When we rush to judgment, we feed our own ego and need to be right. To stay on top of every situation, maintain control of the information flow, and remain in charge. Simply saying, “You may be right ….” offers grace with humility. It's my prayer and desire that you find this admonition as an opportunity to study your life and actions again and see the need for adjustments here and there. selah!

Dear Abba Father I thank You for the gift of life and the privilege of salvation. Father, You've shown me what true humility looks like. Help me to follow Your example of sacrificial love. Please help me consider others before myself every day. Please remind me of my worth and the worth of others. Please teach me how to love others the way You do and to offer grace to those around me. When I'm tempted to feel prideful, please help me remember Jesus' example of humility. In Jesus' name, amen.
