“Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts.” Jer. 15:16.

He was one of the greatest rulers in African history and the creator of modern Ethiopia. Born in 1844, he was captured during an enemy raid and held prisoner for 10 years. Escaping, Menekil II declared himself head of the province of Shewa. He began conquering neighbouring kingdoms and developed them into modern Ethiopia with himself as emperor. When Italy tried to take over Ethiopia Menekil’s army met and crushed the Italians at the Battle of Aduwa. This victory, as well as his efforts to modernize Ethiopia (schools, telephones, railroads), make Menekil world-famous. The emperor had one little known strange behaviour. Whenever he was feeling ill, he would eat a few pages of the Bible, insisting that this always restored his health. One day in December, 1913, recovering from a stroke and feeling extremely ill, he had the entire book of Kings torn from an Egyptian edition of the Bible, ate every page of it—and died.

Feeding on God’s Word nourishes your spirit and renews your mind. It provides direction for life’s challenges, equipping you with truth, guarding you against sin, and bringing lasting peace and joy to your soul. Just as physical food sustains your body, God's Word sustains your spirit. You need it to grow and remain spiritually healthy. Internalizing scripture changes how you think and act, helping you recognize and resist temptation before it takes root. In a confusing world, the Bible acts as a compass to light your path and show you the right way to live. God's Word provides clear, reliable guidance to help you navigate complex situations and make wise, honourable choices.

When you face trials or weariness, God's promises bring comfort, hope, and the exact strength you need to endure. The Word of God acts as a powerful offensive weapon to help you fight off spiritual attacks, lies, and negative thoughts. Regularly engaging with the Bible washes away mental stress, washes out wrong habits, and refreshes a weary soul. Meditating on the truth brings inner peace and fills your heart with a deep, lasting joy that isn't dependent on your circumstances.

Filling your mind with Scripture shifts your focus from temptation and helps you maintain a pure, obedient lifestyle. The Ethiopian emperor in our story are the physical papers of the Bible, you are not called to eat the physical papers of the written word, but to feed voraciously on the scriptures. It's the secret of enduring life and enduring success.

DECLARATION:

Dear Abba Father, I thank You for the gift of life and the privilege of salvation. Lord, I ask that You open my eyes to see the wonderful truths in Your Word, soften my heart to receive Your instructions. Let Your Word not just be information to my mind, but transformation to my character. Help me to be a doer of Your Word and not a hearer only. Let Your Word guide my decisions, calming my anxieties, and strengthening my faith. May my life be a living reflection of the truth I feed on, bringing glory and honour to Your holy name in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
