“Not that we are sufficient of ourselves to think of anything as being from ourselves, but our sufficiency is from God, who also made us sufficient as ministers of the new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.” 2 Cor. 3:4-6.

You must have read about the Greek general and ruler, Alexander the Great. His greatness was so spoken of such that, he himself certainly thought he was great. He was so much into conquering more territories such that tradition has it that he wept because he had no more territories to conquer. Amazingly our renowned Alexander died at the age of 32. That is not even the news. What killed him? It is believed to have been malaria and perhaps typhoid fever caused by the bite of the small mosquito or some little micro organism. Sometimes small things can destroy what we think of as great.

Pride is celebrated in our world. People proudly flaunt their accomplishments, possessions, or qualities they deem admirable in expectation of praise. Yet, selfish pride is a hindrance to salvation and to a fruitful relationship with God and others. James warns us about this self-focused pride when he writes, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble” James 4:6. God opposes the proud because pride is sinful and a hindrance to seeking Him.

Those who insist on elevating themselves and refusing to trust God as sovereign, good, and trustworthy will find their way opposed by God. God will oppose those attempting to be the god of their own lives. Pride refuses to bend the knee to God or repent of sin, and that keeps many people from salvation. God’s grace is given to the humble. Those who humble themselves find God’s favor: Pride can also hinder our relationship with God and others even after we are saved. I guess we have enough warning through the life of Alexander the great.
